Concrete Coatings Across Alaska

Alaska is bigger than any other U.S. state by a wide margin, and its landmarks match the scale. Denali, North America’s tallest peak, towers over Denali National Park; glaciers spill into the sea at Kenai Fjords and Glacier Bay; Mendenhall Glacier sits just outside Juneau; and the Chugach Mountains frame Anchorage. Kachemak Bay, Prince William Sound, the Matanuska Valley, the Brooks Range and the Arctic coast each offer a different side of the state. Most Alaskans live a life that revolves around the outdoors, and their garages and shops hold snow machines, four-wheelers, boats, fishing and hunting gear, and trucks that work hard year-round.

Distinct Regions, Extreme Conditions

Southcentral Alaska, including Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley around Wasilla and Palmer, and Eagle River and Chugiak, has long, snowy winters moderated somewhat by the ocean, with frequent freeze–thaw cycles during spring and fall. Interior Alaska, centered on Fairbanks, has some of the coldest winter temperatures in the country and very short, warm summers, and permafrost and frost-susceptible soils affect construction in many areas. Southeast Alaska, including Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan, is a temperate rainforest with heavy rain, mild temperatures and salty marine air. Far northern and western Alaska face Arctic cold, wind and permafrost.

Concrete suffers in every one of these zones. In Southcentral and Interior towns, water that soaks into a slab freezes and expands, scaling the surface, while de-icers, gravel and studded tires drag grit and chemicals into garages. Frost heave and settling can crack slabs, so crack repair and joint treatment matter before coating. In rainy Southeast Alaska, constant moisture, damp air and salt exposure call for sealed, slip-resistant surfaces and coatings that tolerate moisture during installation. Cold temperatures also limit outdoor and unheated work, so many contractors favor fast-curing polyaspartic and polyurea systems that can cure in cooler conditions, and they schedule exterior jobs in the warmer months.

Garages and Shops Do Heavy Lifting

Because winters are long, Alaskan garages are often heated and serve as workshops, mudrooms and equipment rooms. A seamless coated floor resists oil, fuel, salt and melting snow, and it can be squeegeed clean when slush drains off a truck. Many homeowners also have large detached shops or hangars for aircraft, boats and machinery, and coated floors with added texture keep footing safe in wet conditions. Basements and crawlspaces appear in some homes, and moisture-tolerant primers help there too. Commercial operations, such as fishing and seafood processing facilities, aviation hangars, oil field support shops, warehouses, and restaurants, need durable, chemical-resistant floors that are easy to sanitize.

The state’s main population areas are Anchorage, the Mat-Su Valley including Wasilla and Palmer, Chugiak and Eagle River, Fairbanks and the North Pole area, Juneau, and the Kenai Peninsula communities of Kenai, Soldotna and Homer.
