Gary was founded in 1906 by U.S. Steel, and the massive Gary Works mill along Lake Michigan still defines much of the city’s skyline. The Miller Beach neighborhood, with its sand dunes and the historic Marquette Park pavilion, sits on the edge of Indiana Dunes National Park and has become a destination for art, dining and beach days. The city is also known as the hometown of the Jackson family, whose childhood home still stands on Jackson Street, and the Gary/Chicago International Airport serves the region.
Gary’s lakefront location brings lake-effect snow, strong winds and humid summers. Sandy soils near the dunes drain quickly, but inland areas and the Little Calumet and Grand Calumet river corridors have clay and high groundwater. Winters bring heavy salting and frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Much of the city’s housing dates from the early and mid twentieth century, with basements and detached garages that show decades of wear. Grinding, crack repair and a moisture-tolerant coating system bring those floors back.
Industrial clients in Gary will want contractors with heavy-duty experience. Check the listing on this page, compare it with others in Lake County, and request estimates.
