Olathe is the county seat of Johnson County and one of the largest cities in Kansas. The Mahaffie Stagecoach Shop & Farm Historic Site, the last remaining stagecoach stop on the Santa Fe Trail open to the public, brings the city’s frontier history to life. Lake Olathe and Cedar Lake offer fishing and trails, the Kansas School for the Deaf and MidAmerica Nazarene University are part of the community, and the historic downtown around the courthouse has shops and restaurants.
Olathe’s housing is mostly single-family homes built from the 1970s onward, most with basements and attached garages, along with growing commercial and industrial areas.
Being in the heart of the metro doesn’t spare Olathe from Kansas weather. Ice storms and snow bring heavy use of road salt, and every freeze–thaw swing drives that brine deeper into unprotected garage slabs. Summers turn humid and stormy, with hail a regular spring concern. Much of the city was built on expansive clay, so settlement cracks and basement moisture are common in both older and newer homes. Grinding, crack repair and moisture testing set up a coating to last, and a salt-resistant topcoat handles the winters.
