Concrete Coatings Across Minnesota

Minnesota calls itself the Land of 10,000 Lakes, and the state actually has more than that. Up north, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and Voyageurs National Park are a maze of granite shorelines and pine forest, and the North Shore of Lake Superior climbs past Split Rock Lighthouse, Gooseberry Falls and Tettegouche toward Grand Portage. Itasca State Park marks the headwaters of the Mississippi River, which winds south through the Twin Cities and down past the river bluffs of the southeast. Lake Minnetonka, Mille Lacs and countless smaller lakes shape weekend life, and the Chain of Lakes in Minneapolis is a year-round gathering spot.

From the Iron Range to the Prairie

Northern Minnesota, including Duluth, the Iron Range and lake country around Brainerd and Grand Rapids, sees long, deep winters with heavy snow and frost that drives well below the surface. The Twin Cities metro is a little milder but still cold, with snowfall that keeps plows and salt trucks busy for months. The southern and western farm belt, around Mankato, Rochester and the Minnesota River valley, is open prairie where wind, blowing snow and agricultural use define how buildings are built. The bluff country of the southeast along the Mississippi adds hills, river humidity and older river-town architecture.

For concrete, Minnesota winters are among the toughest anywhere. Water seeps into pores and expands as it freezes, and dozens of freeze–thaw swings a season can scale and spall bare concrete. Road salt and liquid de-icers ride into garages on every car, sitting in puddles that eat away at unsealed slabs. That is why so many Minnesotans coat their garage floors: a properly installed epoxy or polyaspartic system with decorative flake seals the surface against salt brine and snowmelt, wipes clean in spring, and can be given a textured topcoat so the floor is not slick when it is wet. Fast-curing polyaspartics are also prized here because the warm installation season is short, and many can be applied in cooler temperatures than traditional epoxy.

Basements, Garages and Shops

Full basements are standard in Minnesota homes, from early twentieth-century houses in St. Paul and Minneapolis to newer suburban builds in Lakeville, Blaine or Plymouth. Many of those basements become family rooms, gyms and workshops, and moisture vapor coming through the slab is the main thing an installer has to account for, often with a moisture-mitigating primer before the decorative coating goes down. Attached garages are almost universal and often heated. In rural areas, pole barns, machine sheds and shop buildings need tough, chemical-resistant floors, and lake cabins have screened porches and boat garages that benefit from sealed concrete. Commercial projects include breweries, food processing, warehouses, clinics and auto service bays.

The Minneapolis–St. Paul metro is home to most of the state’s population, with suburbs such as Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Eagan and Brooklyn Park. Rochester, Duluth, St. Cloud and Mankato are the other major centers.
