Saint Charles is one of Missouri’s oldest cities, founded as a French trading post on the Missouri River in 1769. It served as the state’s first capital, and the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site still stands on South Main Street, the heart of a brick-lined historic district full of shops, restaurants and festivals. Lewis and Clark departed from here in 1804, which is commemorated at the Lewis and Clark Boat House and Nature Center, and the Katy Trail begins its cross-state route along the riverfront. Lindenwood University adds a college presence.
Living near the Missouri means floodplain soils and high groundwater in low areas, while the hills away from the river have clay and limestone that shift with the seasons. Winters bring frequent freeze–thaw cycles and heavy salt use, and summers bring heat, humidity and strong storms. Many homes, especially in older parts of the city, have basements and garages with worn, cracked concrete.
