Elkhorn was its own city until Omaha annexed it in 2007, and it still keeps a distinct identity on the far west side of the metro. Its original Main Street retains a small-town feel, the Elkhorn River runs just to the west, and nearby Lake Zorinsky and Standing Bear Lake offer trails and fishing. Elkhorn’s schools and newer neighborhoods have made it one of the most popular places in the area for families.
Most homes in Elkhorn are newer, built from the 1990s onward, with full basements and large attached garages. Acreages and farmland still border the community to the west.
West Omaha’s winters bring snow, ice and plenty of road salt, and that brine drips off cars and works into bare garage floors, where freezing and thawing break down the surface. The loess and clay soils in the area settle and shift, especially under newer construction, leading to cracks. Basement slabs can carry moisture. A contractor should grind, repair and moisture-test concrete before installing a sealed polyaspartic or epoxy system.
Because so many homes here are newer, owners often coat their garages early to keep salt from damaging fresh concrete. The contractors listed on this page serve Elkhorn and west Omaha. Look at photos of their past garage floors. Ask how they would protect a newer slab from winter salt.
