Matthews keeps a small-town feel even though it sits right on Charlotte’s southeast edge. Its historic downtown along Trade Street features restored storefronts, the old train depot and a farmers market that draws crowds every Saturday. Stumptown Park hosts summer concerts and the annual Matthews Alive festival, and the Four Mile Creek greenway gives residents a shady place to walk and bike. Squirrel Lake Park and the nearby Reedy Creek Nature Preserve offer more trails and green space.
The town is split between Mecklenburg and Union counties, with established neighborhoods of ranch and two-story homes near downtown and newer subdivisions on the outskirts. Most homes sit on slabs or crawlspaces with attached garages.
Red clay underlies most of Matthews, and it expands and contracts with rain and drought. Over the years that movement opens cracks in garage floors and patios and can draw moisture up through the slab. Long, humid summers with intense sun are hard on outdoor coatings, while winters are mild with occasional ice. Contractors usually grind the surface, repair cracks and test moisture before installing a polyaspartic or epoxy system, and they lean on UV-stable topcoats for anything outside.
