North Dakota is wide-open country with more variety than its reputation suggests. Theodore Roosevelt National Park protects the painted buttes and badlands along the Little Missouri River in the west, where bison and wild horses still roam. Lake Sakakawea, formed by Garrison Dam on the Missouri River, is one of the largest reservoirs in the country, and the International Peace Garden straddles the Canadian border in the Turtle Mountains. The Red River of the North forms the eastern boundary, flowing north past Fargo and Grand Forks through some of the flattest, most fertile farmland anywhere.
The Red River Valley in the east is the bed of ancient glacial Lake Agassiz, with heavy clay soils that hold water and swell. Spring flooding is a recurring concern along the Red and its tributaries. The central Drift Prairie is dotted with potholes and small lakes, and the Missouri Plateau in the west is drier, hillier and home to the Bakken oil fields around Williston and Dickinson. Bismarck and Mandan sit on the Missouri River in the center of the state.
Winters here are long and severe. Deep cold, wind and snow are routine, and while the coldest stretches stay frozen, fall and spring bring many freeze–thaw swings. Salt, sand and de-icing chemicals are spread heavily, and snow and ice packed under vehicles melts onto garage floors. Frost heave and expansive clays can move slabs. Summers are short but can be hot, with intense sun on patios and decks.
Bare concrete garage floors take a beating here, which is why coatings are popular. A polyaspartic or polyurea-based flake system resists salt brine and stays flexible in cold temperatures, and because many polyaspartics cure quickly and at lower temperatures, crews can install them in the shoulder seasons. Slip-resistant textures are essential with slush tracked in for months. In basements, moisture testing and vapor-tolerant primers help prevent peeling, and heated garages and shops benefit from coatings that handle radiant floor heat.
Homes across the state commonly have attached garages, often oversized to fit trucks and winter gear, and full basements are standard in many neighborhoods. Farms and ranches have large shops, machine sheds and grain operations, and the oil patch added work camps, equipment yards and service shops. Fargo, Bismarck and Grand Forks have growing subdivisions, university housing and commercial spaces like breweries, warehouses and medical facilities.
The biggest population centers are Fargo and West Fargo, Bismarck and Mandan, Grand Forks, Minot and Williston, and contractors based in these cities often travel to surrounding towns and farms.
