Swanton is a village in eastern Fulton County, just west of Toledo. It is the home of Toledo Express Airport, and it sits next to Oak Openings Preserve Metropark, one of the most ecologically unusual places in Ohio. The Oak Openings Region features sand dunes, oak savannas and wet prairies left behind by an ancient lakeshore, and it holds a remarkable number of rare plants and animals. The village itself has a small downtown and a strong school community, with farmland stretching out on the other sides.
The Oak Openings sands drain quickly, but the land around them can have a high water table, and the farm country to the west has heavier clay soils typical of the old Great Black Swamp. That combination means some properties deal with standing water and damp slabs. Winters are cold, windy and salty, with frequent freeze-thaw. Coatings that bond over moist concrete, resist salt and chemicals and provide a textured, slip-resistant surface work well in garages and outbuildings here.
