Apple Valley is a small, spread-out town in eastern Washington County, set among high desert mesas east of Hurricane. Gooseberry Mesa, famous with mountain bikers, rises nearby, and Zion National Park’s main entrance at Springdale is within a reasonable drive. The town has wide-open lots, ranch properties and newer homes with big views of red rock country, and St. George is the closest major city.
Summers here are hot and dry, with intense sun that bakes outdoor concrete and fades or chalks coatings that are not UV-stable. Winters are mild but can bring occasional freezes, especially at Apple Valley’s elevation. Desert soils in the area include sandy and gypsum-bearing ground in places, and some clay-rich soils can expand when wet, which can lead to cracked slabs. Monsoon storms in late summer can bring sudden heavy rain and runoff.
Polyaspartic and aliphatic topcoats hold their color in the strong desert sun, and lighter finishes help keep outdoor surfaces cooler underfoot. Textured coatings improve traction around pools and on patios during monsoon rains.
Rural properties often include detached shops or barns for equipment and hobbies, and a chemical-resistant floor keeps dust, oil and fuel from soaking in.
