Flint is the birthplace of General Motors, and the “Vehicle City” arches over Saginaw Street still celebrate that history in the downtown district. The Flint Institute of Arts and the Sloan Museum make up part of the city’s Cultural Center, Kettering University and the University of Michigan–Flint anchor education, and the Flint River flows through the center of town. Just outside the city, the Genesee Recreation Area around Mott Lake and Crossroads Village with the Huckleberry Railroad are favorite family destinations.
Genesee County winters bring a mix of snow, ice and thaws, and that freeze–thaw pattern breaks down untreated concrete. Water seeps in, freezes and causes the surface to scale, while road salt dripping from cars speeds up the process. Heavy clay soils in the area hold water against slabs and foundations and can cause cracking. A seamless coating over a properly ground and repaired slab keeps out water, salt and oil.
Flint’s housing stock includes many older homes with basements, and the city’s industrial roots mean plenty of shops, warehouses and manufacturing spaces with worn concrete.
