Apex calls itself “The Peak of Good Living,” a name that comes from the town’s spot as the high point on the old Chatham Railroad. The restored train depot anchors the historic downtown along Salem Street, where brick storefronts host shops and restaurants. Families spend weekends at the lake in Apex Community Park, on the nearby American Tobacco Trail, or out at Jordan Lake just to the west. New neighborhoods keep spreading out from the town center toward Holly Springs and New Hill, and most of them come with garages that see daily use as storage, workshops and play space.
Apex has grown into one of Wake County’s busiest suburbs, and most of its homes are newer construction on slabs or crawlspaces with attached two- and three-car garages. Piedmont red clay under those slabs expands and contracts with rain and drought, which can open hairline cracks. Summers are long, hot and humid, so moisture and sun are bigger concerns here than deep freezes, though winter ice storms do come through. Contractors typically diamond-grind, repair cracks, and choose UV-stable topcoats for anything exposed to sunlight.
