Alabama runs from the southern tail of the Appalachians to the white-sand beaches of the Gulf Coast. In the northeast, Little River Canyon and DeSoto State Park show off waterfalls and sandstone bluffs, and Cheaha State Park sits atop the highest point in the state. The Tennessee River sweeps across the north through Guntersville Lake, Wheeler Lake and the Shoals. Huntsville’s U.S. Space and Rocket Center tells the story of the Saturn V, Birmingham’s Vulcan statue overlooks the city from Red Mountain, and Montgomery’s civil rights landmarks draw visitors from around the world. At the bottom of the map, Mobile Bay, the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach give the state a genuine coastal identity.
The Tennessee Valley and the hills of north Alabama get a real winter, with occasional snow, ice and frequent freeze–thaw nights that can scale exposed concrete. Central Alabama, including Birmingham, Tuscaloosa and Montgomery, is hot and humid in summer with mild winters and a share of severe spring storms. The Black Belt, named for its dark, rich soil, has heavy clays that shrink and swell with the seasons, a common cause of cracked and heaved slabs. On the Gulf Coast, Mobile and Baldwin counties see some of the highest rainfall in the country, plus hurricanes, salt air and a high water table.
All of that shapes how a coating should be specified. Humidity and moisture vapor are the biggest concerns statewide; slabs on grade in south Alabama often carry enough moisture to push an epoxy off the floor unless the installer tests and primes accordingly. Strong sun on patios, pool decks and open garages favors UV-stable polyaspartic topcoats over plain epoxy, which can yellow. Near the coast, sealed and coated concrete stands up better to salt spray, and textured, slip-resistant finishes make sense around pools and outdoor kitchens. Crack repair is often part of the job in clay-heavy areas, since movement in the soil telegraphs through the slab.
Most Alabama homes sit on slabs or crawlspaces, with basements mainly showing up on hillside lots around Birmingham and Huntsville. Attached garages are standard in the growing suburbs of Shelby County, Madison County and Baldwin County, and many get flake or metallic epoxy systems to look finished and resist hot-tire pickup. Covered porches, screened rooms and pool decks get used almost year-round in the southern half of the state. Rural properties have shops, barns and equipment sheds, and the commercial landscape includes aerospace and defense facilities around Huntsville, automotive plants and suppliers, shipyards and port operations in Mobile, and plenty of restaurants, retail and medical buildings.
Birmingham and its suburbs form the largest metro area, followed closely by fast-growing Huntsville. Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa are the other major markets, with Auburn–Opelika, Dothan and Decatur serving their regions.
