Concrete Coatings Across Arizona

Arizona is defined by big landmarks. The Grand Canyon cuts across the north, the red rocks of Sedona glow at sunset, and Monument Valley’s buttes sit on Navajo land near the Utah line. Saguaro National Park frames Tucson, Lake Powell and Lake Havasu turn desert into boating country, and the Colorado River forms most of the western border. Around Flagstaff, the San Francisco Peaks rise above the largest ponderosa pine forest in the country, a reminder that Arizona is not all low desert.

Desert Floors and High Country

The state roughly divides into the low Sonoran Desert, which includes Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma and the Colorado River communities, and the higher country of the Mogollon Rim, Prescott, Flagstaff and the White Mountains. In the low desert, summer heat is relentless and sunlight is intense nearly year-round. Concrete surfaces can get hot enough to burn bare feet, and standard epoxy will chalk and yellow under that much UV. That is why polyaspartic and polyurea topcoats, which are UV-stable, and light-colored, heat-reflective deck coatings are so popular here. Garage floors face another problem: hot tires sitting on a cheap coating can lift it right off the slab, so a properly bonded, high-performance system matters.

Soil is a big factor too. Much of the Valley sits on expansive clay or on caliche, a cement-like layer of calcium carbonate that complicates excavation and drainage. Slabs can move and crack, and those cracks need to be repaired and filled correctly before any coating goes down. The summer monsoon, usually from midsummer into September, brings dust storms and sudden downpours that flood washes and streets, so slip-resistant textures on pool decks, patios and garage aprons make sense. Up north, Flagstaff and the higher towns get real winters with snow, frequent freeze–thaw cycles and cinders on the roads, which call for the same salt- and abrasion-resistant systems used in cold states.

Garages, Pool Decks and Patios

Arizona’s housing is mostly slab-on-grade, and basements are rare. Master-planned communities in the Phoenix and Tucson suburbs feature attached two- and three-car garages that often serve as workshops, storage, or a parking spot for golf carts, boats and toy-haulers. Backyards revolve around pools and covered patios, so pool deck resurfacing, decorative overlays and cool-deck finishes are some of the most common projects. Snowbird and retirement communities favor clean, low-maintenance garage floors, while ranch properties and rural areas add horse barns and equipment shops.

On the commercial side, the state’s growth brings warehouses, data centers, manufacturing plants and distribution hubs along with restaurants, breweries and resorts that need durable, attractive floors.

The Phoenix metro area, including Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Tempe, Glendale and Peoria, is by far the largest market, followed by Tucson, then Yuma, Flagstaff, Prescott and Lake Havasu City.
